ABOUT THE TALKS

AUTISM: MYTH & MYSTERYMuch has been said about autism recently. But what really is autism? A disease, an illness or a disorder? The presentation will provide answers to questions such as:
What is autism? Characteristics of autism Early signs of abnormality
Can autism be cured? How can we help?

Speaker

Rica Frances Talon the Head Psychologist at The National Autism Society of Malaysia (NASOM) holds a Master of Arts (Major in Psychology), Master of Education (Cand.) (Special Education) has been working in the field of psychology and education for more than sixteen years. Her main area of focus is in the development of children, adolescents and adults with special needs such as autism, emotional behavior disorders and psychiatric.

BUILDING THE BLOCKS OF ACADEMIA THROUGH CREATIVE ARTS
This presentation will introduce the framework and benefits of creativity and play and will illustrate how children learn many crucial life skills through these processes. It will explore psycho-educational and psycho-dynamic theories that can help us understand and appreciate the role of arts and play in child development.

Speaker

Caroline Essame is a British trained Art and Occupational Therapist with 27 years of experience in the field of health, therapy and the arts. She is one of the pioneers and consultants of the Pusat Creative Arts and has worked in educational, hospital and community settings in England, Malaysia, India and Singapore with a wide range of experience.
For the past ten years she has been working with pre-school children and school aged children with special needs. She also designed, worked and got validated the first Masters in Art Therapy in Asia for LASALLE-SIA College of Arts in Singapore.
